The Origami Project

Microsoft code named a project - "The Origami Project" and that was to be unveiled on the 2nd of March.. A website was launched. All that the website hinted was that this new product was equal to the Almighty in terms of 'Omni Present and Omni Potent'. :) It used to end with "Learn more 3.2.06", hoping the product will be released by then.

There were all kinds of rumours running from how it could sweep the iPod, kill the blueberry and reign supremacy in the world of mobile electronics. Bill Gates in 2005 had said that after significant advances in software and hardware, Microsoft would go for a Ultramobile 2007 - a 1-pound, 6-inch device that would combine all the power of a PC, a phone and a camera for about $800.

Putting all the rumuors and any scrap info we have, Origami should hint paper, a digital paper, on which we could write with a sytlus.
Now look at the features of Ultra-Mobile PC

-runs the full Windows XP operating system
-does everything your desktop computer can
-Smaller and lighter than traditional notebooks and laptops
-Multiple input methods: touch screen, stylus, hardware controls, speech, and optional Bluetooth or USB keyboard
-Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 operating system
-Competitive pricing
-entertainment on the move

For more information about the UMPC, visit http://www.microsoft.com/umpc.
Still there is no pricing info available. But it has grown into a 7 inch 2 lb product. Will it grow bigger?

The Origami must be the Untra Mobile PC that failed to show up on the 2nd of March 2006. A little bit unlike the kingdom ruler Microsoft.

The website now reads "Learn more on 3.9.2006".
Is Microsoft releasing anything today?

Interestingly enough the National semiconductors launched a Origami prototype showing three of its eight configurations.
